Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery
Welcome/Overview
Thank you for your interest in the Detroit Medical Center Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Residency program. The Residency is a five-year program approved under the American Council for Graduate Medical Education leading to board eligibility by the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. Two highly qualified candidates are chosen per year. During your training at the DMC, candidates will encounter a fast paced environment with significant exposure to complex adult and pediatric ailments providing an exceptional surgical and clinical experience. The goal of our program is to expose the residents to the breadth of Otolaryngology head and neck pathologies. This is accomplished through an intensive and rigorous clinical and surgical experience, strong didactics, and clinical research. Under the close supervision of our widely recognized faculty, residents receive broad training and experience in diagnosis and treatment of diseases and abnormalities of the ear, nose, throat, sinuses, larynx, esophagus, trachea, and bronchi. Additional intensive training is provided covering maxillofacial trauma and orthognathic surgery throughout the calendar year. The program integrates training at seven university-based medical centers: DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, DMC Harper University Hospital, DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan, DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital, DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, Michigan Ear Institute and Roswell Park Cancer Center, a national comprehensive cancer center. Additional rotations in Head and Neck Surgery are completed in collaboration with Wayne State University Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at Karmanos Cancer Center.
Otolaryngology Program Information
Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery remains a very competitive specialty. COMLEX/USMLE scores, clerkship and medical school grades, as well as extracurricular accomplishments are just a few of the criteria used to evaluate potential candidates. Students interested in applying to our residency program are strongly encouraged to rotate at our facility during their 3rd or 4th year. Additionally, please refer to the document attached at the bottom of this page for frequently asked questions.
The AAO-HNS website (www.entnet.org) provides several educational resources for medical students. We highly recommend Primary Care Otolaryngology as it provides a wonderful general overview of common problems faced in ENT.

Medical students are expected to be active participants while on service. Evaluations are based on the following aspects:
- Medical knowledge - head and neck anatomy, basic otolaryngology concepts as discussed in the above reading material
- Patient care - participation during rounds, surgeries, and clinic
- Problem-based learning - 5-10-minute presentation given on patient/topic based on exposure during rotation
- Professionalism - punctual, engaged members of a team
- Communication skills, bedside manner
- Otolaryngology skills - upon completion of the rotation, students should demonstrate proficiency in the following:
- Comprehensive head and neck examination
- Interpretation of audiograms
- Assist flexible laryngoscopy with identification of structures
- Tracheostomy tube change
- Basic wound closure/suturing/care
The first year of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery training is a specialty track surgical internship and includes:
- 2 months hospital-based general surgery
- 1 month anesthesia
- 2 months intensive care unit
- 1 month plastic surgery
- 3 months pediatric ENT
- 3 months adult ENT
During years 2 through 5 of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery training include rotations in the following subspecialties:
- Reconstructive and Craniofacial Surgery
- Neurotology
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Head and Neck Surgery
- Pediatric Otolaryngology
- Allergy and Immunology
- Rhinology & Skull Base
- Facial Plastic Surgery
Residents are trained in a multidisciplinary approach to patient care as they participate in Tumor Board, Multidisciplinary Cleft and Craniofacial Team Clinic and Pediatric Sleep Conference.
Residents have access to both Detroit Medical Center’s and Michigan State University’s extensive medical library and electronic resources. A generous yearly stipend is allotted for educational pursuits. A cadaver lab is available with monthly attending led dissections for different head and neck surgeries. The Temporal Bone Lab provides an individual workstation for each resident complete with operating microscopes and updated drill and instrument systems. Residents have access to a virtually unlimited supply of temporal bones. In addition, there are multiple opportunities throughout the year to attend academy meetings, laboratory courses, and hands-on workshops.
Regularly scheduled didactics include:
- Monday morning resident lead lectures
- Quarterly journal clubs
- Wednesday morning Grand Rounds
- AAO-HNSF Home Study Course
- Quarterly Morbidity & Mortality meetings
- Weekly Head & Neck tumor board
- Monthly Michigan Ear Institute grand rounds
- Monthly Michigan State University educational events
Our program strongly encourages residents to be actively involved in research throughout their residency. There are three dedicated research months spread out from the second to fourth year of residency. Department faculty and residents are involved in a variety of major research areas including laryngology and voice disorders, sleep disorders, pediatric otolaryngology, sinus/rhinology, otology, and immunology. To view a list of past and current research projects, please see the Past Residents Accomplishments section below.
Students rotating on the two-week schedule will spend one week with the Harper University Hospital/Detroit Receiving Hospital Otolaryngology team and one week with the Pediatric Otolaryngology team at Children's Hospital of Michigan.
Those on the four-week schedule will rotate two weeks on each service.
