Inpatient Rehabilitation at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at Sinai-Grace Hospital is a community-based unit in the heart of Northwest Detroit. The program is located within Sinai-Grace Hospital allowing you to maintain close contact with many of your doctors. With a dedicated rehabilitation team, you are able to have consistent nurses, therapists, doctors and case managers caring for you each day. Our philosophy is to focus on function. The rehabilitation team also engages the patients and family/caregivers in the creation of the treatment program.

Inpatient Rehabilitation is designed to treat a variety of functional impairments, including:

  • Deficits with balance and coordination
  • Swallowing impairments
  • Difficulty walking or moving fr:om one place to another
  • Difficulties completing activities of daily living such as grooming, eating, dressing, bathing and higher level task such as homemaking and cooking
  • Difficulty communicating, understanding, talking, writing or reading following an injury or illness
  • Difficulties expressing self or problems remembering information
  • Weakness or limited movement of the arms, trunk or legs

What a typical stay is like:

Our team provides coordinated services from rehabilitation physicians, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, social work and rehabilitation nursing, which keep you at the center of the program. As a patient, you and your family will be very active members of the care team. You will be an active participant in establishing goals of your treatment and plans for your care following discharge from the program. You and your family or caregivers will be encouraged to strongly participate in training geared towards helping you to become as independent as possible during your stay and  after you return home. Family and caregivers will be encouraged to let you do activities for yourself, and provide assistance after they've been trained by staff on activities you are not able to do on your own.

During your stay in the rehabilitation program you will receive a minimum of 3 hours of therapy at least 5 out of 7 days per week and this treatment will be tailored to your needs.

Professional Members of the Treatment Team:

Physiatrist: Physicians who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation. They lead the Rehabilitation team and coordinate the Rehabilitation program to maximize your functional outcomes.

Rehabilitation Nurses: The team of highly trained nurses provides education and training regarding your care such as medication management, bowel and bladder training, wound care and education regarding a vast number of conditions that may impact you such as diabetes and high blood pressure. They help you to reach your therapeutic goals and ensure that you and your family or caregivers are able to manage your medical needs post discharge.

Social Workers: These individuals will keep you and your family or caregivers updated on progress you are making, assist with discharge planning and communication to your insurance company. They will ensure you are involved in goal setting and treatment planning. They will also help you obtain necessary equipment when you are ready for discharge.

Physical Therapists: Will work with you to improve strength, ability to walk, get to one surface or another and to improve your balance and increase your strength. Treatment with a physical therapist may include exercise, balance activities, standing, walking, and strengthening.   

Occupational Therapists: Work with you to maximize your independence with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, feeding, grooming and homemaking. They may also work with you to adapt or compensate for upper extremity limitations. They will also help with education and training regarding home adaption for increased independence in your home.

Speech-Language Pathologists: Based on your needs, these specialists will work with you to improve your ability to speak, follow directions, remember, and solve problems. They may assist with swallowing and eating issues as well.
