Preparing for Surgery
You will receive a call from the Berry pre-admission testing department regarding your surgery. The nurse will ask you questions about your past medical history, medications you are currently taking, and give you important information for your upcoming surgery.
Note: you can call 248-737-6860 any time to hear a summary of your pre-operation instructions.
Surgery Preparation
- It is extremely important that you make arrangements for a responsible adult to accompany you to the center and stay in the center during your out-patient surgery. Also plan to have to have a responsible adult stay overnight with you the day of surgery. If this is not possible, your surgery date maybe changed or cancelled. This is for your safety.
- If you become ill, fever 101, productive cough, cold symptoms, rash or any significant changes in your health, please notify your phsycain.
- Follow the instructions given to you by your surgeons’ office, if you have questions please call their office for clarification.
- It is a general recommendation to stop ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, and Naproxen, 7 days prior to your surgery. These drugs increase bleeding. If your surgeon has given you alternate instruction….please follow your surgeons advice.
- If you take blood thinning drugs (aspirin, Coumadin, Pletal, Plavix, or similar drugs) please talk with the ordering physician and surgeon regarding the treatment plan specific for you. Many patients cannot just stop these drugs; please do not stop without your doctor’s advice!
- No Herbal medication or vitamins for two weeks prior to surgery.
- No Marijuana use for 4 days prior to surgery.
- Important: On the business day before your surgery, call 248-851-6767 between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. This is to confirm your arrival time at the center. If we don’t receive a call from you by 4:00 pm the day prior, someone from the center will call you with the arrival time.
- No smoking the day before and day of surgery. Smoking inhibits your body’s ability to heal.
- NO Alcoholic beverages for 48 hours before your surgery. Alcohol causes you to bleed longer and delays your healing time.
- It is suggested that you have a light dinner the evening before your surgery.
- You are not to have anything to eat or drink after midnight prior to surgery. This includes water, chewing gum, and/or hard candy. If your nurse has given special instructions for medications, please follow them as directed.
